Trunk Show
The term trunk show or designer weekend can often leave ladies confused. So let us explain what they are, how they work and how to make the most from your appointment at one.
What is a trunk show?
A wedding dress trunk show is a special event held in store at The Wedding HQ, we have a stunning array of designers and gowns in store however it is impossible for us to have every dress from each designers collections in store. The fantastic thing with a trunk show is that a chosen designer will send us extra stunning gowns from their newest collections for one weekend. Meaning extra choice ladies!
Brides then schedule their appointment with us during the event to peruse the collection, try on dresses and on some occasions can meet with the designer or design representative. Its always a great opportunity to see more dresses from a designer you like and there are fabulous opportunity to take advantage of great trunk show offers and promotions.
When and where are they held?
We hold them in our bridal boutique. Trunk shows are planned well in advance, so you can see a list of dates and designers on both our designers website, our website and our social media pages. The shows last anywhere from one to a few days, and appointments fill up quickly so book an appointment early. to book you can either call 01623 238081, Facebook or through our website.
How is a trunk show different from any other time in store?
Most bridal stores can only carry a limited selection of wedding gowns from a select group of designers. Trunk shows give you an opportunity to try on a wide range of dresses from a specific designer that may not all normally be in a particular store. If you’ve been eyeing up a certain designer, this is the best way to see their work in person, try on different styles and seal the deal on your favourite. Even if you walk out empty handed, you’ll get a better sense of whether or not that’s the designer for you—sometimes things look different on Instagram or in a magazine than they do on your body, which is always good to know.
What are some of the perks of a trunk show?
You, the bride, will benefit because you will get the opportunity to try on gowns from the latest collections that aren’t normally in store and if you are a plus size bride we also hold plus size trunk shows. The cherry on top is that discounts are offered if a dress is bought during the duration of the trunk show.
What’s the difference between a trunk show and a sample sale?
A sample sale is when we sell dresses that are already in store to brides at a deep discount. These dresses are called samples because they’re the ones brides try on in store before ordering a new version with their specific alterations and/or embellishments.
A trunk show isn’t technically a sale at all since the dresses are not marked as discounted. But, most trunk shows do offer a discount for placing your order on the spot (sometimes up to 10 percent), so don’t be shy about asking. Sometimes we have white envelopes that brides get to pick for attending. These are where you can take advantage of amazing offers from discounts to free accessories. These might seem like small savings at the time, but they could make a big difference if you’re working with a tight budget (extras definitely add up!).
So thats a whistle stop explanation. We love trunk shows and love the variety of gowns they bring into store.

How to get the most from your bridal appointment at The Wedding HQ
Lauren is one of the owners and co-founder of The Wedding HQ Bridal store, Pleasley Mansfield. She works with hundreds of brides each year and personally handpicks every dress that is in store. She knows which dresses fit and flatter each body type, what works in reality. Laurens aim is to make sure that each of her bride’s feel truly beautiful and the best version of themselves for their big day.
Here she reveals her top tips on how to get the most from your appointment at The Wedding HQ.
Ladies searching for your dream wedding dress is very different kettle of fish then from nipping into Topshop to buy a new top. Here are my top tips to make the most from your bridal appointment and how to create the best bridal experience for yourself.
1) Know your budget and be honest with your consultant,
Lots of brides have this bizarre notion that you have to be mysterious about your bridal budget.
The reason you may get asked the big B question is simply to make sure we can make the most of your time at your appointment. As without arming the team with this information your bridal consultant might pick out gowns that are out of reach, and this only wastes valuable time in your appointment.
So if you have a set budget in mind please let us know at the start of your appointment so we can make the most effective use of your time. Our store has been customarily designed to show our gowns with style and budget in mind, with this we can direct you to the best part of the store to help you find your dream dress.
It will ensure you don’t fall for a dress that’s beyond your reach and could push you beyond your comfort zone. We have an enormous range of dresses, so chances are we have something for you.
2) Bring the right tribe … and keep it small!!
Ladies from years of experience take this pearl of wisdom……….. Bring only one or two people with you.
You might want to make a nice day of it for all your extended family, friends and maids but honestly with so many opinions flying around it makes finding that dream dress nigh on impossible. Bring along people whose opinions you trust. It can be very confusing for a bride when they bring a large group of friends as you hear all their opinions in one go. Look to closest family and friends for honest feedback, but always trust your own instinct. We can always host a big reveal appointment to showcase your stunning gown when she arrives in store.
3) Be open,
Just because you’ve pinned it on Pinterest doesn’t mean she will be “The One”on! It’s easy to discount dresses on the hanger but when they’re on you it’s a whole different story. Try different silhouettes that you might not of first thought of. We will let you look at all of our stunning gowns and will let you pick a selection to try. Listen to your expert bridal consultant as they know about different body shapes and they might pick you some wild cards to try that they know you will look utterly fabulous in. Chances are you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
4) Wear the right underwear,
Set your self up for a great start. Black or neon pants and bras with straps are a no-no. They will distract you from looking at the gown you are in. Keep it nude coloured and as seamless as possible.
5) Believe in your beauty,
Confidence really is key to a smooth and successful dress appointment. Know that you’re beautiful. A bride who is comfortable and confident in her own skin has already nailed it.” And we couldn’t agree more!
6) How Many Stores Should I Go to When Wedding Dress Shopping?
This differs from person to person. We recommend not over doing it, just trying a small selection of stores. We often find that brides that have been to quite a few shops are often stressed or have gotten into the habit of trying on pretty dresses and have lost the main focus of finding their dream wedding dress. Don’t panic the experience doesn’t end when you say yes! You will receive further styling and alteration appointments. Not to mention bridesmaids and mother of the bride appointments. Some ladies fall in love at first sight with their dream dress in the first shop. When you know you know!
7) Don’t be afraid to fall in love with the first dress!
If you fall in love with that first dress then don’t panic and over think it. We will let you try on more dresses in your appointment but if by the end of your appointment you can’t wait to get back into her, don’t fight it “she’s the one”. If you love her and feel amazing in her and can imagine walking down the isle then she’s the one!
8) It pays to be decisive!
Ladies don’t forget your purse! Over the years we have seen ladies fall in love with gowns but have not brought any means of payment with them to their appointment. On returning into store later to buy their dream dress then only to find out that she has been snapped up by another bride! Its a heartbreaking scenario as then no other dress then lives up to the original!
Also the cherry on top is that lots of shops run offers if you purchase your gown at your first appointment, so it really pays to be decisive!
9) When you’ve found the one, stop looking… No more trying on. No more Internet searches. You’ll only be torturing yourself. You made the right choice. Put down the phone!

Ladies this week we handed over the money raised from our charity bridal ball to Kingsmill Hospital.
We raised £2121 and local business Linney print also donated direct a £1000 for us hosting the charity ball.
So we raised a grand total of £3121 for the kings mill gamma scanner appeal.
We would like to thank everyone who either donated their time, raffle prices or attended our charity ball. It was an amazing evening and the whole community will benefit from this fabulous bit of kit. Buying online is a very modern and convenient way to shop. These days we tend to buy a whole host of products in this way from food, shoes, clothes, Christmas gifts and even holidays. Some of you would have even met your husband/wife to be online so may definitely consider purchasing your wedding dress this way too. What could possibly go wrong you may ask? In actual fact there are so many things that could go wrong leaving you disappointed and out of pocket.
The majority of us will have made a previous online purchase and then had to deal with our buyers remorse but is it worth risking that when buying probably the most important garment that we will ever wear. The true beauty of a bridal gown takes time. Most designers ask us to allow around 6 months when ordering our customers gowns as most of the detail is done by hand. Sewing together each layer of lace or tulle for example takes TIME. There is then the bead work, embellishments and fastenings. All put together with love and care to ensure the quality that you should demand.
Buying from a registered stockist such as The Wedding HQ, assures that you will only receive a genuine garment from an actual bricks and mortar retailer, where we work closely with your chosen designer to ensure the best service possible. You can trust that you wont fall victim to a scam where some online sellers are using designers digital images, lulling customers into a false sense of security yet supplying a far inferior product. If you are still to be convinced, keep reading below where we can advise on why Boutique is Best.
FABRIC – Yes the fabric may be described as Tulle, Satin or Chiffon but what does that actually mean in reality? There are so many different grades of these fabrics. If it is a cheap grade tulle this can be very stiff and more suited to a fishing net than a wedding dress. It can be very itchy and uncomfortable (probably highly flammable too) and doesn’t move how you want it to do. You need to actually physically feel the fabric that you will be wearing to ensure the that the structure and support is there for your shape too.
MEASURING – Inevitably you will need to be measured for your gown. At The Wedding HQ like most Boutiques, we have years of experience at measuring you perfectly and transposing those measurements against each designers size charts. Believe it or not most ladies wouldn’t know the difference between the high/low hip or have a clue where on the bust to measure either. If you are petite or particularly tall we may need to go for custom sizing, certainly to accommodate a particularly lacey hemline.
SIZE – How do you know what size to order? Many wedding dresses do not run to the high street sizes so, often you will need a larger than normal size. This cannot however be taken for granted though, as a dress silhouette can also have an impact on the fit. The vast majority of ladies will be in between sizes so why not take advantage of your boutiques expertise when deciding which is the best option for you. We can tell you how a gown will sit on the hip or waist for example or how you can expect it to move with you. All of these factors can be extremely confusing and must be approached with care and confidence.
ALTERATIONS – The most important stage of your gown purchase has arrived and before the big day you may need a few nip and tucks to make sure your gown fits perfectly to your body. We at The Wedding HQ have an in house seamstress (whom works independently) like many boutiques, available to deal with any necessary amendments. Most gowns have hidden boning and supports unlike your regular clothing so, do not just entrust your precious wedding dress to just anyone.
THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY SEEM – So you have searched for that designer dress that you fell in love with that is £1800 with your local stockist but you come across a seller online that is only charging £350. Seems very tempting doesn’t it? A bargain you might think. Approach with caution though as looks can be deceiving. More and more often we are seeing online disasters where the dresses show up looking NOTHING like the real thing, or maybe its the wrong colour or size. A true bridal shop would hardly ever expect a full and final payment on your dress unless its an ex sample/sale dress that is available to take away with you on the day (off the peg). Most of us work on a deposit basis but online retailers want you to pay the whole amount and it is often very difficult almost impossible to get a refund if when it arrives its not what you expected to receive. Due to time restraints this could then make it difficult and more costly to get a replacement gown in time for your big day.
Save yourself the heartache and start the search for your perfect gown with a reputable local boutique. Many will come highly recommended by friends and family whom will have already enjoyed their excellent service and expert advice.
